About Francisco Rodriguez
Francisco Rodriguez One of Francisco's greatest passions regarding government is our foundational document, The Constitution. Within this document are the guiding principles for state and national government, and therefore it stands as a plumb line for governing. Owing to the importance of the constitution, Francisco is an active member of the Constitution Committee of the United States. Additionally, Francisco is part of the advisory board for the West Palm Beach Chapter of the James Madison Institute.

Francisco Rodriguez on Tallahassee's responsibility to protect Floridians

I am a big proponent — whenever possible and practical — of transferring government services to the private sector. It's cost-effective, reduces the size and scope of government, and the job is usually better run by private entrepreneurs than government bureaucrats.

But that's not always the case.

Privatization is not always the answer for government services unless the Florida legislature has a system to hold its corporate partners accountable. After all, we've entrusted our representatives not only with our tax money but our safety and security as well. Here's an example of what I'm talking about ...

In 2000 Florida awarded private contractors the job of inspecting elevators. However, a recent report from the Office of Program Policy Analysis & Government Accountability shows inspections decreased during the 2008-2009 fiscal year while injuries increased. Floridians were put at risk so taxpayers got less than they bargained for.

Privatization is a good thing if it is part of a process that includes accountability. As your State Representative I will search out every creative and necessary option for private-public partnerships. I will also advocate that we privatize government where it makes sense, holding those providing services and the legislature to work within a system that guarantees a financial value as well as a high standard of delivery.
